Happy Thanksgiving!

After watching the following video I realized I needed to say a little bit about what I am grateful for in my life. So watch the video and then I will share what I am grateful for.

Right now I am grateful for my family, my job and my friends. I am grateful that I have a Heavenly Father who is looking out for me. Who knows what I need in my life. I am grateful for my Savior and his Atoning sacrifice. I am also grateful for the gospel in my life. I am grateful for temples. Knowledge(spiritual and secular) I am grateful for the tough times in my life. I am grateful for being truly happy.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope you all remember what this wonderful holiday is all about!

Crazy? Why Yes, I Think I Am

I am going to get my MEd (Masters of Education). I just got accepted into the program at Weber State. I will be starting in January. I am excited. But I am also wondering what I am getting myself into. I know it will be a good thing. I just have to remember I am doing what is best for me and for my teaching.

Sarcasm

Sarcasm sometimes seems to be the center of my humor. I've tried really hard to not be too sarcastic this school year. . . the kids just don't get it. Well, today I slipped. My kids have a few things I check everyday to see if they have got them finished. I had a line of students trying to get me to check their work. I was looking at one of the student's work and the next one in line noticed I was looking at a page he hadn't done. "Oh, we were supposed to do that page?" He started to walk back to his desk when I said,"No, you aren't. I'm just looking at it just for the fun of it." "Oh, okay," he starts to get back in line. A few of my kids who have much older siblings are laughing. "Sorry! I forgot sarcasm doesn't work here. You really do have to do it."
3rd grade DOES NOT equal sarcasm. I just need to tell my dumb random stories and jokes and then I won't have very confused kids everyday.

Messy Desk

Anyone who has known me for any period of time, knows that I have a hard time keeping things clean. If you ever walk into my classroom you realize my desk is dumping ground. It isn't at its worst. I actually have a picture from last year when my desk was at its worst and it is BAD. Anyway, I was talking to one of our special ed teachers. We had to do the IOWA testing and she was doing my make-ups last week. One of my girls looked at her desk and said, "Wow! Your desk is so clean. My teacher's desk has stuff stacked up to here. (hand up showing where it is stacked to) You should go see it sometime." To which the special ed teacher responded, "I already have." Maybe it is time to clean that desk and get more organized.

Our State Fair is Great State Fair. . . Hard Day's Night

I entered three pictures at the fair. None of them got a ribbon, but I have been told that photography is the hardest thing to enter. When I picked up the pictures the lady looked at me and said, "I hope you enter next year. You really are a good photographer." I am so glad she said that because I was starting to doubt a little bit and wondering if this is really the hobby for me. I will just need to be better prepared next year, and have everything ready in time for the Weber County Fair. Then I will enter the State Fair. Here are my pictures:

I bought Beatle's Rockband. The End.

The Parable of the Pennies

This is a long time coming. . . but I hope you get it and understand what I am thinking. So, it starts from a bunch of conversations I have had with my bishop and my friends. My bishop's favorite thing to say to me is, "I don't have to worry about you. You are one of the ninety and nine." And for a while it really bugged me. Because, even though I am one of the ninety and nine I still have hard times and I still need to be worried about now and again. But, as I have thought about this concept and where I am. I don't think it is that bad anymore to be part of the ninety and nine. I started to think about how I could apply this to my calling, compassionate service leader, and I realized I could be the one to reach out to the ninety and nine when their lives are hard. Hopefully, this will give the leaders of the ward time to focus on "the one."
So, about 2 weeks ago I had a dream. In the dream I was in a car with another girl and a guy. The guy was driving and as he started to back out he almost ran into this other guy walking down the street with a jar of pennies. The jar wasn't completely full but there were a lot of pennies in it. The guy drops his jar and most of the pennies fall out. We then jump out of the car and help him gather up the pennies. While we are finishing up the penny guy looks at the jar and says, "There are some missing." The girl says, "Sometimes we may feel like the Lord has lost us." and I reply, "But, that is why we are here. To help find and get the pennies back."
I loved the fact that the guy could just look at the jar and see that some of the pennies weren't in there. Then he kept looking. The Lord really does know where we are no matter what we are doing. Whether we are in the jar buried by all the other pennies or out of the jar waiting to be noticed. He really knows each of us. Then I heard the song, "Ninety and Nine" by Michael McLean. And it all came full circle for me. I am happy to be numbered along with the ninety and nine. I am happy to be a penny in the jar. I hope you are too. The Lord really does love each of us for who we are.

3rd Grade Stories

First lets start with my transient class. At the beginning of the summer I had 26 kids in my class. Then I got my class list in August. I was down to 22. I added 3 and lost 1 all before back to school night (24 for those of you keeping track.) Then on back to school night I lost 2 (22.) Two days after school started I gained 1 (23.) I then had the one student who never showed up taken off my rolls (22.) Then this week one that left on back to school night came back (23.) Am I done with the changes. At least for a little while. We have 101 in our grade, and right now I think I am the lowest or tied for it. If there are any move ins or if my one who never showed up comes to the school, I will be at 24 again.
Notes: I was pretty good at catching 6th graders catch notes. I know that some of them still passed through the cracks. . . apparently my surprise party was all planned in notes. Imagine. . . sitting in my classroom. I am reading aloud to my class when I see a note pass from the back of the room to the front. I go to the student stick out my hand they hand it to me. What they don't realize, you crumple it up I really want to know what you didn't want me to read. You don't I still am curious but I don't have to read it. I have intercepted such gems as, "You should tell ___________ that you LOVE her." "Do you like me or my bruther?" (Spelling is exact.) "You stol it. You should give it back!" He, He, He.
Casanova, is the one who needs to tell one girl he loves her, while asking another girl if she likes him or his brother. I've been watching this boy flirt for 4 weeks now. Honestly, it is kind of funny. I don't want to ban flirting in my class, but for heaven's sake they are EIGHT! At least most of them are. They don't need to worry about boy and girl stuff. But, then I think about me at that age, and the boys I liked and I realize it goes with the territory. What is the most that can happen. . . they play with each other at recess, and I intercept notes. I'll have to keep you updated on this kid. You can't but help to like him. He is a cutie and there is a reason why all of the girls flock around him.
The question everyone keeps asking me, "How are you liking 3rd grade." It wasn't until about a week ago I said I liked it without the explanation of, "It is good. But totally different from 6th. My class is really cute. I'm not used to it yet." I am still not used to it, but the kids are REALLY CUTE. The best part. They listen to me and follow my directions when I tell them something. It isn't a fight to get it done. I still miss the 6th grade attitude. But, I'm enjoying what I am doing and my kids are so much fun.
Okay. I know this was longer than 24 hours. And I haven't finished the rest. But, I need to go to bed. I will finish all the non-school stuff later.

Slacker. . . . yep! That is me

Okay. I know. I know. I have been slacking big time in the update of my life department. There is SO much to tell you about, but I have to get ready for my observation tomorrow. But, when I am finished. I will tell you about my Casanova, notes being passed in the class, my transient class. Also, I will tell you about 3rd grade and if I really like it or not. Then I will tell you the Parable of the Pennies (this is not school related.) And the Fair pictures for this year. Oh and I almost forgot: Beatles Rockband. Ok. I will be back within 24 hours and tell you all about my life.

Start of Something New

Wow! It has been a great summer. Too bad I didn't write much about it. Just quick some of the things I did: I went To Star Valley, WY (twice), Blackfoot, ID, Lagoon (a few times), Provo, and many other activities. It has been a fun and busy summer. I worked at school for a couple of weeks before my official start date. I also taught a bunch of Special Education Teachers new ways to teach math.

I started at school on the 17th. I spent the first week trying to get my world in order. I kept describing to people how I felt: Teaching 3rd grade scared me. Setting up my classroom didn't. When I started sixth grade it was the other way around. I knew what to do with 6th graders, I had taught them plenty of times before. 3rd grade. . . I don't know what to do with them. How often do you let them go to the restroom in a day? What do they talk about? They don't find my jokes funny. What do I do? Well, back-to-school night came and I was REALLY nervous. Like to the point I wanted to throw up. Parents seem scary to me, with all the problems I had with parents last year. I really wanted to skip the whole meet parents and start teaching. But, I made it through the night, without throwing up and I decided the kids were really cute. And I had a few parents who were very supportive of me and the classroom. "Ok," I thought to myself, "I can do this." But, I still didn't know what to do with third graders. The weekend before the offical start of school I kind of avoided figuring out what I should do the first day of school, until Sunday night. Where the idea just kind of came to me.
The first day was pretty successful. The first week has been pretty successful. I am just having a hard time adjusting to all the new stuff and how to teach 3rd grade. I have to be nice and I can't tell all my jokes. . .or say my random things. The 3rd graders just don't get it. I realized on Friday, as my class was walking down the hall to lunch, they are the best behaved 3rd grade class down the hall. . . then I thought to myself. "I'm treating them like 6th graders. I am laying down my expectations and I keep pounding them in. . . Maybe I should let up a bit." Ummm, no. . . I am not going to. Because honestly, I like that my 3rd graders walk down the hall perfectly. And they walk into the classroom quietly. It really makes life so much easier.
By Wednesday everyone was asking me if I like 3rd grade. Right now I don't. It really is two different worlds. I came from a group of "7th graders" and I have moved to a group of "2nd graders." That is what makes life so hard. I also can't say that I have any real experience of teaching 3rd grade yet. We'll see what happens as the time moves on and things really start to pick up.

My Summer So Far

Well, I have been around the past few weeks. I actually come on to my blog everyday, but I never write. I don't have any excuse just that I don't think my summer has been that interesting. And I don't really want to write about it. I think the best way to do this would be a slide show of everything I have been up too. Some of the pictures are from before school got out, but most of them have been what I have been up to since school got out on May 29th. As you will see I have gone on a few hikes, one of them three times, the Dinosaur Park, Hogle Zoo and just hung out with my friends. More to come in July, concerts, the 4th, Idaho. I'll try really hard to stay up with all of that. And when my classroom is in order I will post about that fun in my life.

Moving On

I'm moving on in more ways than one. The move from my old house to the new one is one way. I am moving from that college life I was living. I was talking to my old roommate and I told her how much I saw the Lord's hand in this move. I think it was best for everyone involved. And now I am living a more adult life, where I am taking care of myself and learning to be better at taking care of stuff. I have no one but myself to blame for the messes.
Next, I am moving on to new adventures with school. I am so excited to get to know the 3rd graders that will be in my class next year. And to try something new, something better. And to hopefully be more successful in that aspect of my life. I am excited to see what happens and what I can do in the lives of those I teach.
I'm moving on from the problems I am seeing in my personal life. I am getting rid of those things that I feel I don't need in my life anymore. Mostly people. I've been involved in so many toxic relationships in the past few months. I am done with them. I still care about them, and want what is best but I am moving on and forward and not holding back waiting for them to figure out what they really want.
Last, I am moving on to goals I have in my life and hopefully brush off a few of the ambitions. I really want to write and publish a book. I am so excited to try and see what I can do. So, this summer hopefully I'll start spending time everyday writing and getting those ideas out. I'll keep you updated on the progress. And I want to get into Graduate school. I want to get my MEd (Masters of Education.) I just need to figure out how I am going to do it and where. I really want to do it through USU. I am hoping I can take the GRE and get going on it.
It is going to be an interesting ride, but I know it is all for the best.

Packing and Moving

Well, my crazy life is kind of under control. However, I am moving my house tomorrow and I haven't finished packing. And my classroom gets packed up Monday and Tuesday. By the time I am done with all of this I am going to be sick of boxes and all that stuff.
The best part of today. . . SCHOOL IS OUT! Yes. I am so happy. It isn't that I don't love teaching and being there. It is the fact that this year has been all around hard for me. I am ready to move on and meet with the new challenges I am going to face teaching 3rd grade. I am going to miss my 6th grade class from this year. I really want what is best for them. And I worry what will happen to them in Junior High. Especially those who really can do better they just don't want to prove it to me. I really almost cried this week a couple of times. These kids are great and I am so happy they were part of my life for a year. I have changed because of them. I hope they have changed because of me. I hope that I made a difference in some lives. I think I am going to miss these kids more than I miss last years class. . . just because I have put so much of myself into them. It was rough but worth every tear and moment of frustration. To see those kids shine and give each one of them a hug and let them know I really do care.
Okay. It is now time for me to go back to packing. . . or I will go to bed and pack in the morning. I will tell you about the move when I get all settled.

Exciting Day and Other Stuff

We went to Lagoon today. It started out perfect. The weather was beautiful, sunny warm, but not hot. Around 1:30 A group of my students, my roommates and I went and rode Rattle Snake rapids. While we were waiting in line a few sprinkles of rain fell. Not that bad it was kind of nice. After the ride, my roommates and I headed to Wicked to ride it. While we were walking over there it rained a little harder. Then about 10 minutes later while we were in line it got harder, it seemed to let up a bit, then about 15 minutes later when we got on the ride and started going the rain got even harder. By the time we were off the ride it was full on down pour. My roommates decided it was time to leave and I was left for the next hour to hang out by myself and wander and wait for the rain to leave. The rides were still open but I knew I couldn't handle anymore (I got really motion-sick today.) However, by the end of the day we saw hail, rain, and lightning. It was an interesting Lagoon trip.

Next little bit of information. In order to get my "Level 2" license I have to take a test called the Praxis test. It is 2 hours long and is a combination of essay and multiple choice. I didn't study and I wasn't sure how I would really do. Well, I found out today. . . I needed 160 to pass. . . I got a 184! I am "highly qualified" to teach! YEA! I am so excited. Now I get to take the GRE and get started on my graduate work. It is pretty exciting for me and very happy. If you're wondering how I passed without studying; this test is actually just a measure of what you know about good teaching practices. As long as I thought how would a good teacher handle this situation everything workout just fine.

Last, I am moving this weekend. I am leaving my house on 35th street for a different one on 36th street. (Yeah, a whole block.) But I am excited about the move. It is going to be a good thing. I will tell you all about it when I have moved.

3 Days, then school is out!

And The Peasants Rejoiced!

Our principal is retiring at the end of the year. He was sick earlier in the year and we got an administrative intern who took care of things while our principal was gone. This intern was amazing and so much like our principal that we really wanted him to take the principal's spot next year.
Half way through the year we were told that we were getting an intern here who would be helping out. We were told the intern would probably not become our principal. When we found out the intern we had be for was our intern we were excited, but sad at the same time. We have fretted for months about who we were getting and what changes they would make to our school.
Well, yesterday they announced to the school board the changes they are making. And we found out this morning. The intern is our new principal! Hooray! There is nothing more exciting than to know things aren't going to change that much and it is someone I am comfortable with and who knows what is going on in my teaching world. This is a good thing. I am so excited.

Hmmmm

So many things have happened this week. And I honestly cannot write about any of them. It has been an interesting, stressful, and good experience for me. And maybe someday when all the dust has settled I will tell you about it. But, I am in the middle so I am not going to say anything more.

On a much lighter note. School ends in about 25 days. I am ready for this year to be over. I have been given so many trials and I really am grateful for them. I have learned so much. I had a parent come to me and tell me I might get her daughter next year, and she didn't even seem sorry at all for it. This was one of the parents who at the first of the year wasn't happy with me. It made me feel so good and happy. I need to remember why I teach and I what I am there for. To teach every student who comes through my door.

Last of all. I am excited to teach third grade. I really am going to miss sixth but I know this is for the best for everyone. I am very excited and cannot wait until I can get my stuff moved and start getting ready for next year. New challenges are always fun.

Oh, WAIT! One more thing. Spring is finally here. I am obsessed with tulips and warm days as well as the rain. What a wonderful time of year when everything comes to life again. Here are some pictures I took this week at the Ogden Temple where the tulips are in full bloom.

Claim The Exceeding Great and Precious Promises

This weekend was Stake conference. We got a new Stake Presidency. Our presiding authority was Elder Condie. I've had a lot of things on my mind lately about my life and how it is going, and where everything is going. And I prayed this weekend to receive some guidance during conference. First thing: our former president was really good at getting those who spoke/speak to not use their talks and just talk from the spirit. I felt that this whole conference was all those kinds of talks. I know some of them were prepared and they did speak from them, however, it was exactly what I needed to hear. Every session. It was all very uplifting.
Second: Elder Condie. Is amazing. He has a way of making you laugh and then bring it right back to the spiritual. He spoke at the institute two months ago, and his talk was amazing. But, what I really like about Elder Condie is this talk: Claim The Exceeding Great and Precious Promise. He gave it in October 2007. At that time that talk was an answer to my prayers. I was in the Conference Center as he spoke and I knew it was the Lord speaking to me. Well, today he quoted from his own talk, "And just as God remembered Rachel, God will remember you." I knew then the Lord is listening to me and he knows me. It reminded me of so many great and glorious truths I have learned in the past year and a half. I took the time today to listen to the talk again, while I read it too. (I put it on my iPod back in 2007.) I learned new things and I felt the same feelings I felt when I first heard it. The Lord truly does answer prayers and He loves each of us so much. I think it is so wonderful and I am so grateful to know he is aware of me while my life turns upside down in the next few months and I get to get used to so many new things. The Lord is aware of me as an individual and it is wonderful!

Spring Break

It has been an amazing and fun Spring Break. Just time to hang out with the family and my friends. I wish every weekend could be just as fun.
On Thursday I was at home all day and just enjoyed myself. Friday I went to Baby Animal Days in Logan with my sister, sister-in-law and all the kids (4 in this group.) It was a lot of fun to just be with them and enjoy the perfect weather that day.
On Saturday I went to my mom's to "help" put in the new kitchen floor. Apparently my way of helping is to watch my brother and brother-in-law put the floor in. I also got to watch the kids (3 of them) while everyone else looked for the floor. I think my best helping moment was when I hid the Easter eggs. That was a lot of fun. Honestly, I felt like the whole day was a waste of time. But, I know if I would have stayed home I would have been wasting my time here more than I did there. At least I got to talk to my family and see how everyone was doing.
After I got home I went to the institute Spring Show. It was amazing. I loved the message that was spread about "Coming Home" and returning to our eternal home. The singing was great and so were the dancers. And of course like always the acting was just a little cheesy. But, I noticed something. The Spring Show is a lot more spiritual than the Christmas show. . . don't get me wrong the Christmas show has its spiritual moments too. But, the Spring Show is special. I loved it!
On Sunday I went to church and came home and just enjoyed being home and by myself for about 6 hours. Just relaxed and did what I wanted to do.
Today, I read pretty much all day. I finished Northanger Abby and honestly, I am sad I didn't pick it up sooner. It was just what I needed to finish my weekend with.
That is pretty much the fun I had this week. I still am taking suggestions for my new blog name. I will take those until May 31st. Then I will give my blog the new name on June 1st.

Along With the Rest of the Change My Blog Now Needs a New Name

My life is changing. Next year, I will no longer be a 6th grade teacher. I will be teaching 3rd grade. Let me tell you the story. . . .
On Wednesday I was called into the office. Where I was told I would now be teaching 3rd grade instead of 6th. At first I was shocked. "What! I am made to be a 6th grade teacher and now you are moving me to 3rd! That is going to be HORRIBLE!" Then I remembered, I have been praying for things to workout for the teacher on my team who has given me so much grief in the past two years. I knew this was the answer to my prayers. And not only is it good for her. It is good for me. We both get to start fresh. I get to work with a team that is amazing and have everything under control, but will still allow me to be myself. I also get to work with kids who love their teacher and want to be in school. (This will be a complete change from what I have right now.) Hopefully in the process my stress will lessen, and I will enjoy teaching again. Which, I had no idea I wasn't enjoying myself until my mentor said something to me about it yesterday. I've changed in the past year. I think I felt I had to prove myself, and that I could do it on my own and I didn't need any help from anyone. I really did though. I can't be the teacher I need to be without the support there. I have learned that more this year than I have any other year.
I'm excited for this change and for the different things I am going to be teaching. I am also excited to be working with the team I will be with. From what I have seen I know they are working really hard to work together and help each other out. It is going to be a good thing in the long run. And if it helps save my job next year, I will do anything.
So, as of June 1st my blog can no longer be called, The 6th Grade Life. I need a new title and I don't want it to be the same old thing. I am going to do a contest. Give me your best title(s) for my blog. I will pick the one I like and it will be my new blog. There maybe a prize in it for the winner. Good Luck!

Things Are Changing

I can't really say much right now, but I am on the brink of a major change in my life. I'll let you think about that, and I will fill you in when I can. Tomorrow, or maybe next week sometime.

Why I Teach

This has been a question I have been asking myself lately. Why am I a teacher? Is this really the job for me? I have a major fault when it comes to being a teacher and that is my temper. Anyone who has known me for any length of time would be able to say that I really let it get the best of me sometimes. It was a lot worst when I was growing up. But, I have learned to control it. There is another fault that ties right with this one, and that is I wear my emotions on my sleeve. So, you know when I am in a bad mood, a good mood, or I am indifferent.
These faults have made this year difficult for me. I have so many problems with my team and within my classroom that within the first few months I came off mean and not sympathetic. I think there are two reasons for this. I feel like I need to prove myself, and also because I don't know what to do half of the time.
So, over the past few weeks this temper has come to bite me. I found out that a couple of the boys in my class were doing things to make me mad and then they were recording me when I finally broke. The situation has been taken care of. Luckily for me I have two administrators who would like to see me succeed and do the best I can. I've tried to not loose the temper lately and to be happy and everything but you can only do that for so long. It is really hard when the two boys who were fighting on Friday, fight again on Monday. It really just wears on you. So, I was in a bad mood on Monday and I was mean again. As I watched a note being passed from one student to the other I went and got it and the one crumpled it up. I read it and it said, "Don't you just hate Miss. Duncan? She is so mean." "Yeah, you've just figured that out?" OUCH! But, I took it in stride. Just looked at them and said, "You really don't know me."
Fast Forward 24 hours. I had just returned to my classroom and I sat at my desk, looked at the mess and sighed. . . (It is a huge mess. Surprise, surprise.) Then I notice a note on my desk and there is a smiley face on it. I open it up and it is from one of the students who passed the note. Telling me she was sorry, but not really, because there are somethings that she doesn't like about the class and school. But then she told me one thing she does like, I let my students be themselves. And she has really come out of her shell because of it. And I will be one of her favorite teachers because of it.
Just that one note made it worth every tear I've shed this year, every moment I have fought with my team, and every bad day. That is why I am a teacher. To help my students become who they are meant to be.

When the Going Gets. . . .

Earlier this week I was thinking about the movie While you Were Sleeping. In one part the dad tells Jack that sometimes in your life everything is perfect and it is good. And then Jack informs his dad it wasn't that moment. I had exactly that. Everything seemed to be perfect and good, then I found out something that made it not that moment. But, just like the dad I was able to understand and move on and be happy about the changes happening. (Ok. Not really happy, but understanding.)
Even though things aren't exactly the way I would like them to be, I am content. Because I know things will workout the way they are supposed to and when they are supposed to. So, I guess to finish my little saying, it would be. "When the going gets content. The content takes over." Hmmm, doesn't make any sense but I think you get the picture.

My heart is breaking all over again. I just found out some information and let's just say it adds to the junk from the last three weeks. When I am trying to do what is right why does it seem nothing works out?

Life. . . or Something Like it

Well, my life right now is interesting. This experiment I have been doing on myself is what I thought it would be. HARD! And I am making things harder on myself than they need to be. I got a call from one of the Relief Society instructors in my ward and she asked me to teach on Sunday. "Welcome sisters, to the Allison show. One Sunday full of my musings." It is my fault. I should have said no, but I didn't want to. Humph!
Enough of that, I will let you know how it all goes. I am sure things are going to work out with that part of my life. It is also going to be fun. I really do enjoy being up front and teaching and speaking. So, it will just be another opportunity for me to do it.
Anyway, things with school aren't going well. I found out that some of the kids in my class are doing something that could get me fired if they really wanted to. And it is kind of disheartening/frustrating. I went to the temple yesterday just to get my mind clear and some perspective. And let's just say I got it. The first thing that keeps running through my mind is that some of these boys that are causing the problems are in "leadership" positions in the school. I told our intern principal that I think if they can't be positive leaders in the classroom they have no right to be leaders in the school. And he agreed. The next thing: I was thinking about scriptures and trying to get some inspiration about what I should do and a scripture popped into my head. "Be strong and of good courage, fear not nor be afraid of them. For the Lord thy God he it is that is with thee. He will not fail thee nor forsake thee." (Deut. 31:6) This scripture has been one of my favorites since high school. And as I thought it yesterday I knew I needed to read it. So, I did. When I read it I knew that no matter what. I am where I supposed to be, and doing the things I am supposed to be doing. I will be supported by the Lord and be able to face these things in my life. I just need to "be strong and of good courage." Today was a much better day, at least in the way I handled things. I just need to remember that I can do it and I can handle it.
Tomorrow we have a field trip and Monday there won't be kids at school. And Tuesday these boys are going to be taken care of. We'll see what happens.

The Experiment

These past few weeks have been pretty interesting and there is a reason why. I am actually really excited that things have happened the way they have. I was asked to speak in church on March 22 (that is this Sunday.) I actually LOVE speaking in church, and I think I am good at it. The biggest problem I had when I was asked to speak was the fact they asked me a MONTH ahead. (I shouldn't complain because my roommate is speaking on Mother's day and they have already asked her.) What I hate about having so much time is the talk never stays the same from what you wanted to say the first time you found out what the topic was. So, you wait until you are closer to the date so you can get what really is needed to be said.
On the first I sat in sacrament meeting thinking about my topic and what I wanted to say. When I first heard the topic I had a quote ring through my mind. I knew that the topic was meant for me and I knew what I wanted to say. I however, knowing how the spirit works, didn't get started on my talk. I decided I would wait until the week before to know what I wanted to say. Well, as I sat in sacrament the next week thinking about my topic and what I should say. I started to look up scriptures. I just had a thought. "I need to work on this in my life. So, I am going to make some changes in my habits and conduct an experiment." That is what I am doing. I am on week three of my experiment.
I don't think I will write my talk until Friday or Saturday. But, I have a pretty good idea what I am going to say. That my hypothesis is right. I don't want to say too much more about this. I might have to publish my talk so you can all understand everything. But, let me just tell you that during the past few weeks, things have been hard. Nothing has come easy to me. But, I am happy and at peace. I don't think things will ever be perfect, but at least I know I can handle it all.

Lent

I found out one of my students gave up fighting with me for Lent. I think that was the best sacrifice he could have made. We might just make it through the rest of the year.

Big Steps

Today I was looking at the Utah State website thinking about how much I want to go and get my MEd (Masters of Education.) And before I knew if I found the application and started to fill it out. I can't fill it out all the way until I take my GRE test and figure out who I can get letters of recommendation from. But, I am hoping I can have it all done so I can apply for Fall semester. Wow! I'm excited and I can't wait until I can actually get into the program.
But, I have one problem. . . I need to take the GRE, does anyone know where I can register for it and any studying materials that will work. . . this is the one thing that scares me half to death.

Birthday Weekend. . . and More

Well, I wanted to get the weekend over with before I wrote about it then I got busy. . . and honestly I didn't feel like writing. But, here goes nothing.
Friday: Kyrie and I went to the ballet, Madame Butterfly. Beautiful but tragic tale of a Geisha who kills herself. There was blood and everything. Her white dress almost turned completely red (at least in a few spots) my one question is do they have a new costume every night? Or does the fake blood come out. . . hmmmmm.
Saturday: I had a "Single Awareness Day Party" and really it was a birthday party. It was a lot of fun. So many people there we just played games and watched a movie. And just talked. I don't do that kind of thing very often. So, it was kind of nice to have fun and get to know some people in my ward better.
Sunday: I went to church and then I went to my sister's house. It was my niece's birthday too, she turned one, and so we celebrated. My sister even bought us birthday crowns. Kaitlyn kept hers on pretty well. I was impressed. The cutest thing was when she would take hers off hand it to me wait until I put it on then runaway. Oh, it was adorable! I am so happy to have such a great birthday present for the rest of my life.
Monday: I was a bum pretty much all day. Except I did start to clean my room and then I bought a Wii. I LOVE it! I know some of you are thinking, "Allison a Wii and a new car! Are you crazy?!?" And I will answer yes I am. But, I like it and I can so I do. . . When I start school back up I won't be able to do this as much as I like so I have to do it now.
Tuesday: I slept and stayed home most of the day. Mostly because of the snow. I did venture out for my Love and Logic class. It was worth it. I finished cleaning my room and as of right now I have kept it clean. Hurray! It is nice to have somewhere clean to hang out. I also spent the day not worrying about school and how my kids were doing. I could really take another day or two away.
Wednesday: I got back to school and found out my class was horrible for the sub. I am so frustrated about that. One of the kids was downright defiant. (The best part about it is my class is telling me what happened. The sub just told me it was a rough day.) But other than that it was a typical day.
Thursday: Today. . . another typical day. I was supposed to be observed tomorrow so I have been getting ready for that. Well, my principal is sick so he won't be observing me until after Parent Teacher Conferences. Oh well, just means science will be low pressure tomorrow. I actually really am looking forward to the next few weeks with science. I am teaching my favorite topic in the CORE: Space, Moon Phases, and Seasons. It is going to be so much fun! I am so excited. I will let you all know how well it goes.
Now it is time for me to go. But here is an As heard in Miss. Duncan's Class from today.
I was waiting for my class to stop talking, so I pulled out my phone and was looking at old texts. And the topic of my "secret admire" came up. I laughed pretty hard and said, "I know who all my admires are." (Well, not exactly but that is much more witty than what I really said.) Then O said (while impersonating me), "If you don't call me Miss. Duncan I am going to break up with you." I started laughing. Sometimes they bring you to it. . . Then someone else said, "You have a behavior mark poster in your house and make him make a behavior check if he doesn't." Then, "And you have a bathroom punch and when he needs to go to the bathroom you make him make a punch." So, here I sit and think what a great idea! I will make my home life exactly like my school life! Blah! I am mean at school I don't want to bring that to my home. Except the behavior poster might help with roommate problems. . . hmmmmm.

Mental Health Day

I am taking a mental health day next week. And I need it. After fighting vertigo today during math, and fighting with students the rest of the day. I just can't wait until 5:00 tomorrow when my "Birthday Weekend" starts. It is going to be the best weekend. Tomorrow my roommate is taking me to the Ballet. I've talked her into dressing up for the evening. Then Saturday, I am helping my brother move into his new house. Then I having a party. I decided I didn't want to sit around on Valentines again so I am having a party. Sunday I am going to my sister's to celebrate my birthday along with Kaitlyn who gets the fun job of being my FAVORITE birthday present ever. Monday is President's Day so I am just going to relax for a day. And Tuesday I am taking my mental health day. I am so looking forward to the day. And the fact I can just sit and do anything I want for one day. And not have to worry about my class.

Now about school yesterday I did a fun activity. I trained my students to move around the room when a timer went off. (It was fun actually.) Then I put on the song, "You are Loved by Josh Groban" and we went around the room and filled out compliments to everyone in the class. Then I typed them up. . . with some help. It was great to see my students today to as they read their compliments and the way they were all so happy to see what everyone said about them. It was such a great activity, and one I think I will use again.

Last, my wonderful students are starting to act so bad. I don't know what to do. However, I keep getting told it will get worst before it gets better. I had a student today say I am mean in class. I am fine after school, but during school I am mean. I care, but not enough to let him know. He isn't going to win. (Yes, this is the same student who I had the hard time with a few days ago.) I took the information I was given and assessed it. I think I could be nicer in my tone. . . but overall I think I am pretty nice to my class. I have to watch what I say and how I say it. . . Anyway that is pretty much what is going on. I am so excited to have the weekend to enjoy and the one day to take a break.

Another Fun Day

So, on Friday I feel like I was completely inspired. As I sat at my desk trying to correct some essays and the students were writing new ones. The student who sits right in front of my desk decides that I am the question answerer. If he wants to know something, I am the teacher I should know and so he asks, and asks, and asks, to the point I am not getting anything finished, and he isn't getting anything finished. So, I decide to give him a notebook, he can write any question he has in this notebook and I will answer it. I promise, it might not be that day but it will get answered. So, I hand it to him, and one of my other students wants one, to the point that every single student gets this magical notebook. I am thinking to myself, this will be great. Now, any comment they have that will distract from the class will now go in the notebook. And honestly, I am loving it. I spent most of the day on Friday answering questions. Today, I took a different approach, I am only going to answer at the end of the day, and give them back. I got some good information, and some good things are happening. I am starting to build some relationships back up. I hope. And we'll see.
Fast forward to today. The student who inspired the idea, kept bugging the girl he sits by. During Study Hall, I sent her group to the restroom. He felt that it was the perfect time to lounge out on her seat. I told him to put his feet down and to turn and face forward. He put his feet down, but refused to face forward. I counted to five then I told him to go outside and to comeback in when he knew what to do. I did one thing in this whole thing that was bad, I went out into the hall and engaged him for a minute. I just told him, I would love to have him back when he was ready, if he wanted to stay in the hall for the rest of study hall I was fine with it. Then I went back into the classroom. He came up and asked if he could talk to me, and I flat out told him no. I have spent numerous amount of minutes in the hall with this kid talking to him about the same things. I don't want to spend my class time working with this, again. So, he went to the principal who told him to go back and to do what I told him to do. He came back to me and tried to engage me while I was finishing up somethings for the end of the day. I just looked at him and said, "I gave you that notebook for a reason. This is the perfect time to use it I would like you to write what you want to say. This way I can process what you are trying to tell me and you can process what I am trying to tell you."
"I don't know why I have to write when I can just tell you."
"Because, I am not going to talk to you when you are in this condition." (At this point he was starting to cry with frustration)
"Well, I want to talk about this now."
"Nope, I want you to write it out for me."
One other student pipes in, "She's right, I had a concern and I wrote it down for her and we are working it out. She can understand my point of view and I can understand hers."
"That is what I want you to do. Just write it."
"Why won't you talk to me?"
"Just write it."
You can see where the rest of the conversation went. He left the classroom just like every other day with his head down and mad at me. And I am beginning not to care. He won't let go of the bad feelings he has for me and I don't want to fight it anymore. So, I am not going to. I was talking to the kindergarten teacher I am friends with and we started talking about this program "Love and Logic." I am taking a class for it right now and I feel that I haven't been able to use it in my class very effectively. Until my friend said something about if I would have talked to him he would have won. And she is right. My refusal to talk to him and to allow him the time made it so I was still in control. Like I said my biggest problem was that I engaged him during the time he was in the hall.
I really do like this kid. He is a good kid. But, he isn't treating me with the respect I as his teacher deserve. And I am kind of disappointed in it all.
I'll let you know if he writes to me and tells me what he wants to say. But, I don't think he is going to. But, whatever he writes I am sure I can refute every point one-by-one.

Things To Think About

I had a couple of things come up on Friday and now I have somethings to think about. I had a student draw a picture of me. And how I wish I would have kept it. I liked it, found the picture funny. It was me, with horns and standing at a door that said, "death camber," with skulls on the ground. I'm saying, "Dum kids. I hate them all." Or something to that effect. It started me thinking though. I am putting this persona out there to my students that I don't care. When I really do. After my principal talked to the student who drew this amazing likeness of me, he picked three random kids and talked to them about me. And all around it has come to I am inconstant, and some of them don't know that I care. Here it is half way through the year. And they are not sure if their teacher cares. That is a serious problem and one that needs to be fixed immediately. So, I've been thinking all weekend what I can do to let them know how much I really care. I haven't come to the perfect solution yet, I have some ideas and I am going to work on them.
As my principal and I talked about this, he came to the conclusion that I am guarded. As an adult he can see what I do and how much I care. But the students cannot. They don't know how to read the adults as well. At first I was thinking he was talking about my telling of personal information. Then I thought about it more and I have realized I am all around guarded. I don't let a lot of people in too deeply. I hold back until I am sure you are someone to be trusted. I don't show too much emotion for fear that if I do my heart will be broken. So, it is now time to let that go, at least in the classroom, these kids need to know that their teacher cares and wants them to be happy in school. It is also time for the teacher to leave outside emotions outside. And only allow what is happening at school effect what she is doing at school. I will keep you updated on all of this. It is going to be interesting to see what happens while I make these changes. Hopefully they will be good.

Sub. Plans

The one thing I don't like about having a substitute is that I have to write out plans. I know what I am doing tomorrow, and I could just do it. But, in order to leave to go to a conference I have to have everything I do written out for the substitute to take care of it all. But, I know once I get to the conference that won't matter anymore. I will relax enjoy and learn something. I am excited for the chance to learn something about how to be a better teacher. What a good day it is going to be. I just have to get through writing the Sub. Plans. Then I can do then next thing I don't like, cleaning my desk.

Happy Birthday to Me!

Okay I know my birthday isn't for a few weeks yet. But I have to have an excuse. On Wednesday I bought this:

And here is the inside:
It is a 2009 Toyota Corolla Sport. I absolutely love it.

The Making of History

No matter what political party you follow, or who you voted for you should be excited about the history that is in the making today. I get the joy of watching the inauguration of the first African American President with my 6th graders, not only watching, but teaching.
I'm excited to see if the changes Obama wants to make for our country is going to happen. There were a lot of them, and I hope he can do what he wants to do.
This picture is Federal Hall in New York where George Washington gave his ignagural address on April 30, 1789. I kept thinking about the difference between politics today and politics when the nation was first started. Here is a link to President Washington's address.
I am very grateful I live in a nation that can have a very peaceful change of power. What a blessing it truly is.

My 100th Post!

I am going to celebrate my 100th post by telling everyone 100 things about me. (I was going to post 100 funny things said in my classroom, but sadly I can't remember all of them so it was going to take me FOREVER to get to 100.)
1. I am the youngest of five kids.
2. I have had the same style of CTR ring for 8 years.
3. I have an obsession with stars. When I go outside at night I can't help but look up. In the winter I look for Orion, in the summer Cassiopeia.
4. I love books. I had to rearrange my room just to accommodate the books I have here. (I have more stored at my mom's house.)
5. My favorite author is Jane Austen.
6. My favorite books are Number the Stars (children), and Pride and Prejudice.
7. I hate making people unhappy.
8. I hate pickles. I hate them so much that when they have been put on the lettuce I can't eat the lettuce. I can still taste the pickle.
9. I teach 6th grade. (I never said they were things you wouldn't know.)
10. I am LDS.
11. I can't stand silence.
12. I think I am shy.
13. I am a little gullible. (right Becky?)

16. I have had 7 roommates in 5 years.
17. I can play the flute, oboe, and piano.
18. My niece, Kaitlyn, shares my birthday.
19. I like my birthday month.
20. My mom had hopes that I would be born on Valentine's Day. I am now happy I wasn't.

29. My friend Laurel and I made a spook alley every year. And sadly it was one of the things that contributed to the ending of our friendship.
30. I love to travel.
31. I have been to 31 states.
32. I was never the ideal student. If I was in my class I would drive myself crazy. I was capable, but not willing to show it to the rest of the world.
33. When I get telling a story, I will jump from side story to side story and back to the original story just to get sidetracked again. Sometimes I forget where I was going with it and sometimes I have no problem. It drives my mom nuts. She has learned to deal with it though.
34. Purple. (Need I say more.)
35. I used to think I would get married on June 21, 2002 (I would have been 20.)

73. Right now I am listening to a song that I don't think I should. But, I like it too much. It is "Gives You Hell" by All-American Rejects. I just think if someone ever breaks up with me I will want to sing it at the top of my lungs.

89. My best friend is my sister, Becky.
90. I like having short hair, but I miss the long hair pull back options.
91. I like to vacuum.
92. I don't mind cleaning the bathroom.

Environmental Center

Thursday and Friday were very interesting. A great experience and just all around fun. But, there is a story around it. So, here goes nothing:
On Wednesday I asked Ginny if she would drive me to school in the morning, so I didn't have to leave my car in the parking lot. She of course was more than willing to help me out.
We got up and got ready on Thursday and got into her car, ready to go. Keep in mind that all my overnight stuff was in her car. Ginny was parked on the side of the road. When it was plowed there was still a big pile of snow right by her car. She tried to pull forward and high centered the car. No, problem we'll just dig it out. So, we got out of the car, and a few moments later Ginny thought of something in her car and went to get in, the doors were locked. Ginny doesn't have a spare key. Ok, that is an easy fix, it is automatic locks, and I know enough of police coming to get cars unlocked to know they don't do automatic locks. So, we'll just call a locksmith and get going. My cell phone is packed away with my overnight stuff (which is in the locked car) and Ginny's well, it wasn't in the house like we thought, or in her pocket. It ended up in her car too! So, we went to one of the houses just up from ours and asked the girls for a phone. I called school and told them what was happening, and I wasn't sure I was going to make the bus. If I needed to I would just drive up to the Environmental Center. I am thinking at this point, "I hope it doesn't snow tonight. I won't be able to get down from the center and get home tomorrow." Then the girls whose phone we borrow. Tells us it is easy to break in and it will only take about 30 minutes. We should try it. Well, not so easy as it sounds. We had two guys, one of the girls, and the two of us. We were out there for about 20 minutes and nothing was happening. I kept feeling key in my pocket, for my car, just wishing my stuff was out of Ginny's car and I could go to school and make the bus. About this time is when Ginny remembers her dad and mom have a key. It is up in Morgan, but maybe they can come and rescue us. They could. And We waited for another 30 minutes for her mom to make it. By this time it is now 9 o'clock. I have missed the bus. And I have to drive to the Environmental Center. I was also thinking that I didn't want to deal with it. And I just wanted to go home. I didn't care anymore. I didn't think I wanted to spend the rest of my already long day with 40 sixth graders. I still drove up there and I thought to myself I just needed to get rid of my attitude before the I got to the lodge. I made the half a mile hike to the lodge and I walked in and the faces lit up. It was great! I then decided I was going to have a great time. It took enough to get up there, now I just needed to enjoy it all.

So, while we were up there this is what we did: we watched a movie (I seriously think it was made in Canada and about 20 years ago) about Hypothermia. We ate a delicious lunch, and after we went out cross country skiing. I ended up being the last teacher out of the lodge and I was the "sweeper" there were two kids who were taking their time, both of them were very timid on the hills. They also kept falling. Finally we all made it to the goal (after about 1 and 1/2 hours.) We hung around there. I got to be the first teacher to head back. I just was the leader to make sure the kids made it back and take care of them. I got there in a half an hour. It just proved to everyone else I didn't choose my first amount of time it took me to make it. I honestly fell in love with cross country skiing last year. I forgot how much fun it is and I can't wait to go again.
After we got back we had a great dinner and taught the kids how to make boondoggle. Played games and watched a movie. It was so much fun.

The next day we went out skiing again. On this trip one of the kids ended up getting hurt. I am not sure how serious the injury is, but she did a front flip while she was trying to go down a hill. In the air something happened and her foot/ankle got hurt. She got to ride back on the snowmobile. And since I was waiting with her, I did too. I missed going down some of the hills and all that. But, the look on the kids' faces while they saw me was the best reaction. After that we came home.

Overall the experience was a lot of fun, even with the all difficulties that happened while we were trying to get to school. I can't wait until I can go again, next year.

Random Thoughts

I don't have anything significant to write today so I just thought I would lead you down a path of randomness:
1. I am going on an overnighter with 40 sixth graders tomorrow. We will be cross-country skiing. I am excited. Yet, not.
2. I have the best roommates ever. I don't go a day without laughing my head off.
3. We are in the process of a new grade book system at school. I like it. It is more user friendly (thanks to the fact that the school district developed it and the teachers are giving input) and fun to use.
4. I'm writing a poem for one of my roommates. I have the best opening line. I just can't really fill in the rest. How do you top, "Oh! Joyous rapture! In the bathroom."? The opening is really just too perfect. I can't get the rest to meet up to it.
5. I got some test scores from last year that I really wish I would have had earlier. However, now that I have them, I was happy to see my kids scored above the average in my school, and the state.
6. I now have to use these scores to help my class write better this year and improve.
7. It is amazing to me that people have so many different definitions of words. I had a student that kept telling me I was "yelling" at him. When I felt I have done no such thing. Then I asked him what "yelling" meant to him. And he told me that when I get firm I am yelling. I think it is when I get in a face. I have "yelled" at a student before and it was defiantly not to him.
8. I have been stalking some other teacher's blogs and I have found that most teachers don't get support. And I am more and more grateful that I am at the school I am at. Even though I have a tough time with my team, they still try to help me. I have a principal who is willing to spend 30 minutes helping me resolve student issues. I have a mentor who is amazing. And parents who are willing to help and who all show up to PTC.
9. I got cute post-it notes from one of my fellow teachers for Christmas. I love them.
10. I am still in LOVE with anything Jane Austen. I got my three books I ordered from Amazon and I have read two of them in three days. I know it could have been 3 in 3. But I decided I should go to institute and bed instead of reading last night. I can't get enough. I need more. I don't care what form of media it is I just need more.

I think that is enough for today. I hope you have a good day! I will let you know how the overnighter goes.

My Break by Allison Duncan

Well, it's the last few days of my much needed, and much appreciated break. I've been pretty lazy and I have enjoyed ever minute of it. I did have a crazy moment on Monday, the 29th, when I thought I wanted to go back. I was bored and needed something to do that day.
I went home on the 24th and played with my nephews, brother and sister-in-law. Just hung out watched movies. I got the chance to play Santa. That was fun, and different for me.
Christmas day, we just hung out at my mom's house for the day. Apparently the whole state of Utah got snow that whole day, except Centerville. The snow didn't fall until that night. But, that storm was wonderful. It was fun to have a white Christmas. It was also fun just to hangout with the family and play games.
The 26th is when EVERYONE came and we had Christmas. My sister Shauna and her family braved the road conditions and got to Centerville in only 4 hours and 30 minutes (from Blackfoot it is usually a 2 hour 30 minute to 3 hour drive.) We had dinner then gathered in my mom's really small living room for presents. It is always nice, cozy, loud, and fun when we do that. My sister Jen had me for Christmas (we do a rotation) she was so excited for my present. We were sitting next to each other and she kept telling me how excited she was. "I saw it and knew it was for you. When I took it home and showed it to Mike he said, 'That is Allison's gift.'" This is what I got:

When I first saw it I thought it contained the six major novels, then I noticed it was too small. It is a commentary on all the books, and there are also velum envelopes with "stuffs" in it. Pictures for earlier editions of books, edits, pictures of Jane, Juvenilla writings. I read it in two days. The rest of the night we just hung around and talked.
The rest of the break has been pretty uneventful. On News Years Eve I went to my stake's party. Ran the obstacle course and danced. I have great roommates and great friends that make those events so much more fun than anything else. We act like dorks and don't care what anyone things about us.
I honestly am ready to do something again. I've enjoyed the break but I am ready to go back. I feel nice and rested. It is just tome to get back to normal.
